Warriors President and Chief Operating Officer Rick Welts was named this year’s TheStadiumBusiness Executive of the Year, while Chase Center’s opening event with Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony won Event of the Year, it was announced earlier today. Now in their 11th year, TheStadiumBusiness Awards were designed to recognize leadership, innovation and achievement in the delivery, operation and management of sports facilities globally.
In what was a major shift for the Warriors, Welts guided the organization to a successful transition from a basketball team to a sports and entertainment company, which included managing the development of the team’s new state-of-the-art arena, Chase Center, which opened in September of last year. The construction of Chase Center required Welts to oversee a massive effort consisting of numerous architectural, design, construction and engineering teams. In total, about 9,800 individuals across 260 companies contributed towards the construction of the arena. In addition, during the peak construction phase, as many as 1,500 craftworkers were on the site daily to ensure work was done on schedule.
