Chase Center’s doors officially opened with a ribbon cutting event held on Tuesday, September 3. That event was the culmination of a seven-year process that brought the Golden State Warriors back to San Francisco. Along with that, The City now has a venue that will attract world-class entertainment, starting with the Chase Center Grand Opening concert featuring Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony on Friday, September 6.

In May of 2012, at a press conference attended by the late San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, then-Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, and then-NBA Commissioner David Stern, Golden State Warriors chairmen Joe Lacob and Peter Guber announced plans for a new, privately financed sports and entertainment center in San Francisco. Two years later in April of 2014, the Warriors announced plans to locate the new arena on 11 acres of private property located in the Mission Bay neighborhood, which the team agreed to purchase from Salesforce.

The Warriors gained support for the Mission Bay project from key groups in 2015. In October, the Mission Bay Citizens Advisory Committee unanimously endorsed the Warriors’ project. That same month, the Warriors earned an official endorsement from UCSF and gained the support of the California Life Sciences Association, along with a coalition of the top 11 biotech companies in Mission Bay. In November of 2015, the project received unanimous approval from the San Francisco Planning Commission, followed shortly by the Municipal Transportation, Entertainment, Port and Public Utilities Commissions.

In January of 2016, GSW Arena LLC and JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced that the Warriors’ new sports and entertainment center in Mission Bay would be named Chase Center. The Warriors’ plan was unique in that Chase Center would be the only 100-percent privately financed arena or stadium, on private land, to be built in the U.S. over the past two decades, requiring no public subsidies. On January 9, 2017, Mortenson/Clark, the construction company selected to build Chase Center, took control of the site to begin construction on the new sports and entertainment venue. Just a week later, on January 17, 2017, GSW Arena LLC officially held a groundbreaking ceremony at the location of the future Chase Center.
